MVLL CHAMPIONSHIP PICNIC - SATURDAY 9/19 4 - 6 PM

MVLL CHAMPIONSHIP PICNIC is this Saturday 9/19/09, 4:00 - 6:00 PM at SRP.   Come on out and enjoy the community BBQ and celebrate a great All Star run from our Junior World Champs and Senior State Champs.  This is a great accomplishment for our kids, league and community.  The bbq will also serve as a fund raiser, and we will have Autographed Goodies from the Dbacks, Cardinals, and from the World Series.   The BBQ is being hosted by MVLL and Albertson's volunteers.  We will be cooking burgers and hot dogs, and beverages are available.

Arizona caps unbeaten run with JLWS championship

No doubt about it.

Mountainview (Scottsdale, Ariz.) Little League looked like the best team at the Junior League World Series the day it first took the field. It finished the same way Saturday afternoon.  The USA West representative scored three early runs and starter Grant Martinez did the rest to shut down Aruba 9-1 in the title game.  The victory, Mountainview’s 24th straight, made it the second team from the state to win the series title at Heritage Park in Taylor.

Sunnyside Little League from Tucson won the 1992 championship.   “These guys have done it all year,” Mountainview manager Steve Erickson said. “They’ve all been even-keeled.”   The team has been together for the past four seasons and it showed in the late rounds of the tournament. Mountainview rarely committed errors and played well with the lead.  “Pitching and defense have been keys for us throughout the tournament,” Erickson said.

Arizona scored the game’s first run in the second when Michael Salazar came home on a throwing error and Jimmy Ditroia made it a 4-0 game two batters later when he sent the first pitch from Francisco Taveras over the centerfield fence.  That was all Mountainview needed. Martinez had two runners on with one out in the second but got away allowing Aruba’s only run.   He allowed just five baserunners the rest of the way and only one reached second base.

“It definitely felt good to have some runs,” Martinez said. “I started to get nervous when we started warming up, but after the second inning I started to relax.”  Pinch-hitter Michael Salazar capped a four-run fifth with a two-run homer to give Mountainview even more breathing room.  Martinez finished with the win after allowing two hits and striking out two in the first 5-1/3. He also had a pair of RBIs.

“He’s been doing that all year,” Erickson said of his starter, the only 13-year-old on the team. “He throws good off-speed stuff and they seemed to have some trouble with it today.”  Reliever Ryan Riggs worked the final 1-2/3 innings and allowed just one hit.

Wilmar Imperator had the lone RBI for Aruba, which upset Puerto Rico 7-5 in the International Division title game Friday night.  “We had to use our three best pitchers (against Puerto Rico) and coming here for the first time, our goal was to win the International championship,” Aruba coach Glenda Thomas said.  “We were happy with that.”

Mountainview topped Middlebury (Ind.), the USA Central representative, 6-2 in Saturday morning’s USA Divisoin title game.  The game, originally scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday, was postponed after the International game went more than five hours. Series officials decided not to start the game at 10:30.  It didn’t bother Mountainview.  “I felt better about playing Saturday morning than I did sitting around Friday night,” Erickson said. “It really didn’t bother these kids.”  Mountainview ended the series outscoring its opponents 46-16 in six wins.

MVLL WORLD CHAMPS WANT TO THANK EVERYONE

We would want to thank everyone for all the support, postive wishes.  The team's accomplishment is a result of hard work, staying focused and most importantly, working as a "TEAM".

Our success this year could not of happened without the support of sponsors, familys and league members.

We like to thank everyone for everything you did.  We felt we were playing for our community and our special memories are not only for us, but for you as well. 

The Championship will be shared with everyone in our community and we want to share our experiences with everyone.

Yesterday's ESPN U Broadcast of the game will be televised again on Thursday evening on ESPN2.  Please check local listings.  The team is planning a party and would let everyone know where and when.  We like to celebrate with everyone and close out this GREAT SEASON with you.

TAYLOR, Mich. - Winning a world championship still hadn't sunk in for Grant Martinez.

"It's pretty insane," said Martinez, the winning pitcher for Scottsdale Mountain View after Saturday's 9-1 win over Oranjested, Aruba, in the title game of the Junior League World Series. "We thought winning our regional was a plus. But this? Wow."

Martinez lasted into the sixth inning, keeping Aruba's potent offense at bay, allowing only two hits. Ryan Riggs finished with one-hit relief to close out the win.

Mountain View jumped to a 4-0 lead in the second, the big blow coming from Jimmy DiTroia's three-run home run.

"That was a big boost for us," Mountain View Coach Steve Erickson said. "That was huge. We thrive on getting a lead."

Later, Luc Trotta's RBI groundout scored Michael Salazar, upping the lead to 5-1 in the fourth. In the fifth, Martinez broke it open with a two-run single, scoring Cody Erickson (two hits) and Dylan Cozens. Salazar followed with a two-run shot for extra insurance.

Aruba committed five errors. By contrast, Mountain View played error-free ball.

"Pitching and defense have been our key," Steve Erickson said. "But our bats really came alive at the end. They started out slow, but finished strong."

Mountain View's eight-hit attack was more than enough to back Martinez. He struck out only one, but the defense took care of the rest.

To get to the title game, Mountain View had to play the U.S. title game early Saturday after having it postponed from Friday due to a curfew and a rain delay. It worked out fine, though, as Mountain View topped Middlebury, Ind., 6-2.

Middlebury jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Cozens looked strong and was in control the rest of the way and was the winning pitcher.

A Trotta sacrifice fly in the second inning tied the game a 1-1. Cozens put his club up 2-1 the next inning with an RBI single. In the fifth, Cozens plated DiTroia with an RBI single. Later, Cody Erickson scored on a throwing error.

The Junior League World Series is the tournament for players 13- and 14-years old. During the weeklong series, Mountain View scored wins over Middlebury (4-0), Easley, S.C. (10-1), Albuquerque (7-4) and Jackson, N.J. (10-8).

What seemed like a negative in having Friday's U.S. title game with Indiana postponed until Saturday was actually a plus.

"Both those guys (Cozens and Martinez) threw 95 pitches each," Steve Erickson said. "We were sitting around last night, waiting to play. But I think that benefitted us, having a couple of good pitchers like we have."

Mountain View Little League will be bringing a world championship back to Scottsdale, beating Aruba 9-1 Saturday in the Junior League (13-14) World final in Taylor, Mich.

Grant Martinez and Ryan Riggs combined on a two-hitter for MVLL, which won 23 straight games in the postseason including a win over Indiana earlier in the day for the USA title. They had just five hits in the title game but took advantage of four errors by Aruba, the International champions.

The Scottsdale team jumped on top early with a four-run second inning, three coming on a home run by Jimmy Ditroia. Michael DeRegis had a double in the inning.

MVLL blew open the game in the fifth. Jake Anderson had a one-out single, followed by a DeRegis double. Duncan Morfitt drove in a run with a groundout, and Michael Salazar put an exclamation point on the game and the season with a two-run homer.

USA - WEST "ARIZONA" IN CHAMPIONSHIP GAME AT 2 PM AZ TIME

Mountain View LIttle League will Represent the State of Arizona, The West Region and the United States in a World Championship Game against International Champion ARUBA.

Aruba beat Puerto Rico last night 7 - 5 in 10 innings.   Arizona beat a tough Indiana team 6 - 2 to win the US Championship and represent the United States in the 29th Junior Little League World Series.  The game will be broadcasted live on ESPN U today at 2:00 PM Arizona time.
